Below is a summary of the assignments and due dates for this unit. See below for assignment descriptions.

  1. Tuesday, April 18: Exercise 1 due.
  2. Monday, April 24: Exercise 2 due.
  3. Monday, May 1: Two Final Revisions due.

The main assignments of this unit are two Final Revisions. The final revisions count from 20% to 50% of your final course grade. That's not a typo: 20% to 50% of your final course grade! How well you complete the final revisions can make a big difference in your final course grade.

Please read the information concerning the assignments carefully, especially the expectations for the final revisions and how the grades on the final revisions can be lower or higher than the grades you received on the earlier drafts: it all depends on the quality and extent of your revising. Please note that the grade on a final revision will be lower than the grade on the earlier draft if the only changes are the correction of errors and the rewording of sentences.

As stated elsewhere, you should expect to spend 6 to 9 hours a week working on assignments for the course. This unit spans about two and a half weeks, so you should expect to spend approximately 16 to 23 hours working on the assignments below. Schedule your time well!

Unless indicated otherwise, assignments are due by 10:00 p.m. on the due dates.

1. Exercise 1

Due Date: Tuesday, April 18

This assignment is required, but it includes extra credit points.

To complete this exercise, you need to copy one of the essays you have written for the course, save it as a new word-processing document, and then make many changes to the sentences. The grade for this exercise will be recorded twice under "Miscellaneous Assignments," and you can earn up to 180 percent on this assignment. Any points you earn over 100 percent will be recorded as extra credit, so there are many extra credit points available.

You can make a copy of your essay by opening the essay in your word processor, choosing "Save As" from the file menu, and then giving your essay file a new name. Please save the copy of your essay as a Rich Text Format file.

After you complete the exercise, you will need to post it as an attachment to a WebBoard message.

Make sure to read the instructions for this exercise carefully, and ask if you have any questions about it.

2. Exercise 2

Due Date: Monday, April 24

This assignment is required, but it includes extra credit points.

This exercise should give you some practice identifying and correcting errors. As the assignment instructions indicate, you can earn up to 160 percent on this assignment, and any points you earn over 100 percent will be recorded as extra credit.

After you complete the exercise, you will need to post it as an attachment to a WebBoard message.

Make sure to read the instructions carefully, and just ask if you have any questions about it.

3. Two Final Revisions

Due Date: Monday, May 1

Important: If the changes to an essay involve only surface-level revision (the correcting of errors and the rewording of sentences), the grade on a final revision will be lower than the grade on the earlier draft. Please read the Final Revisions page for more information.

Two final revisions are required. The two revisions count as 20% of the final course grade, and, if you earn a higher grade on a revision than you earned on the earlier submitted draft of the essay, I will delete the earlier grade and replace it with the higher revision grade. If you raise the grades of two essays, then, the final revisions will count from 40% to 50% of your final course grade.

Because the grade on a final revision can be lower than the grade that you earned the first time you submitted the essay, even if you make changes or corrections, it is important that you read the expectations for the revisions carefully. Most importantly, the final revisions must demonstrate both deep-level and surface-level revision. Please read the Final Revisions assignment page carefully so that you understand the expectations for the final revisions.

Of course, just ask in WebBoard if you have any questions about your work on the final revisions.

Questions?

Of course, just ask if you have any questions about the assignments on this page.
