MLA Documentation and
the "Works Cited" Page

There are many different types of sources you might use in a paper and a specific and correct way to document each type of source on the "Works Cited" page. Below are models for the ways you should document the two most common types of sources.

A book with one or more authors

Last name of author, First name of author. Title of Book. City of publication:
name of publisher, year of publication.

An article or work in a collection of articles or works by different authors

Last name of author of article, First name of author. "Title of Article." Title of
Book. Ed(s). Name of editor(s) of book. City of publication: name of
publisher, year of  publication. page numbers of article (such as 125-46).

The spacing and punctuation in the examples above is correct. Any other punctuation or spacing is incorrect.

Miscellaneous Information about the "Works Cited" Page

  1. Every work listed on the "Works Cited" page must be cited in the paper, and every work cited in the paper must appear on the "Works Cited" page.
  1. All entries on the "Works Cited" page should be double-spaced, with no extra spaces between entries. The words "Works Cited" (with no quotation marks) should be centered at the top of the page, with double double-spacing separating the words "Works Cited" from the first entry. (If your paper is double spaced, just press [Enter] twice after typing "Works Cited.")
  1. Entries are listed in alphabetical order, according to the author’s last name. If no author's name is given, begin with the title of the source and alphabetize the source according to the first word of its title.
