Class Discussion:

You are required to participate in class discussions using WebBoard for this course. You will be required to participate in 12 of the 14 discussion units for this class and will be given a score from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, for a maximum of 120 points within this grading category, which represents 10% of your total grade.

During these discussions you should practice good netiquette, always observing our agreement to respect others and their opinions, although we do not always have to agree. For a discussion on proper netiquette practices, you can consult Mr. Rambo's Netiquette pages on the subject.  

Note: These discussions can be very helpful in preparing you for the quizzes, so you might want to complete them before taking your quizzes.

Using WebBoard

For this course, again, you will need to use WebBoard. You may take this Enter WebBoard  link, or you may use the link on the bottom of each course web page.

For those of you who have not used WebBoard before, Mr. Rambo has a Using WebBoard link that is very helpful and very thorough, and you are welcome to use it. Note: Do Not Take the "Link to WebBoard" link from his page; that will take you to his class's discussion. Always take the link above this paragraph or the link at the bottom of any of the course web pages.  Two things Mr. Rambo, the IVCC expert, says are necessary to remember when using WebBoard are that 1) your browser must be set to accept cookies to use WebBoard and 2) if you type in the URL address to access the discussion rather than taking the links, then you must type the whole address, including the "http://" at its beginning.

Discussion Requirements

It is important to remember that you are required to participate in these discussions and that you are being graded on them. I will evaluate the quality and quantity of your contributions, and I expect them to conform to the parameters I explain here.

I will evaluate the quality in terms of your comprehension of the texts and topics we are discussing; I will look for you to quote from the course materials and your texts to support your opinions about them; I will expect that your comments contain knowledge and insight, and since this is a discussion, I will expect you to react to others' comments and to provide helpful information to others, as needed. These comments should probably be at least eight sentences long a piece.

I will evaluate the quantity of your comments, as well. I expect that you will log in to the WebBoard at least three times a week, making at least five comments a week. At least two of these comments should directly respond to the discussion prompts that I provide, and three should address the comments of your classmates. 

This is the most elastic category of evaluation for the course. Should your comments be extremely analytical, helpful, creative, prolific, or profuse, you will earn more points, occasionally a few "extra credit" ones. Likewise, if your comments are bare minimum responses, not spread out over the week, or all posted near or on the last day of the week, your grade will be subject, potentially, to a negative score.

If you have any trouble with WebBoard, please do not hesitate to ask me for help as soon as possible. You don't want to lose points for a technical problem that can be quickly (and we hope painlessly) resolved.

In these discussions you will be mainly discussing the materials with each other, but I will post responses to questions you pose in the WebBoard, once I'm satisfied that no one else has been able to find the answer with conscientious looking and searching.  In other words, if a classmate asks a question, you should make an effort to determine the answer and include a response citing what you did to try to answer the question. I will check into the WebBoard about three times a week to check for questions, evaluate and contribute to your conversations, and check your comprehension and response levels.  if you have a question relating to your coursework individually, a technical problem you are experiencing--like e-mail trouble, for example, or a response that a classmate has made to one of your comments, please e-mail that concern to me with the course title and number in the subject line.   I check my e-mail much more frequently than I access the discussions.

Please keep in mind, too, that, as I know is the case for many of you, this is not the only class I have in this semester.  I try to respond to all queries within 48 hours, but that is not always possible depending on the quantity of them that I receive. the most important thing to remember about these discussions is that while you are all learning and while you all learn differently, you can all have fun and develop sustained relationships through these discussions.  Indeed, the more you support and respond to each other, the less like work these discussions will feel and the more motivated you will be in all areas of the course.
