ENG 1205-01 Home Page Instructions Assignment (200 points)

Your task for this assignment is to write a set of instructions for locating an office, classroom, lab, or other location here at IVCC. You will complete this assignment as a group of 3-4 students. You’ll complete part of the assignment in class, part of it out of class.

REQUIREMENTS

Assuming a layperson reader (a new student at IVCC), write a set of instructions for reaching one of the locations below from the temporary main entrance of IVCC's main campus building. Your group will be assigned one of these locations.

Your instructions should contain the following:

1. Informative title 4. Appropriate notes, cautions, warnings, and dangers
2. Brief introduction 5. Brief conclusion
3. Numbered steps

Your group will have class time to work on the instructions. This group workshop day is noted in the course syllabus. If you miss this day, it’s basically impossible to contribute your fair share to the group project. In the case of an unexpected emergency that prevents you from coming to class that day, contact me as soon as possible.

USABILITY TESTING

After writing your instructions, you will give them to another group of students to test, using the Usability Testing Form linked from our course page. In turn, you will be testing the usability of another group’s instructions. The usability testing date is noted in the course syllabus. Missing this day means that you won’t earn any points for this part of the assignment. If your group chooses, you may incorporate the feedback from the other group in a rewrite of your instructions.

GRADING

Your group’s instructions will be graded on the criteria outlined on the Usability Testing Form, as well as correctness (grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling). You will earn points as follows:

Instructions 170 points
Participation in Usability Testing 20 points
Attached Usability Form from Other Group 10 points

Typically, all group members will receive the same grade. However, if a group member was absent on the instructions workday, didn’t participate in the usability testing, or in some other way didn’t contribute his or her fair share of the work on the instructions, that student’s grade will be penalized (see notes above).
