Special events designed to create interest in engineering technology careers were presented to teen mothers in the IVCC district in collaboration with the Starved Rock Associates for Vocational and Technical Education (SRAVTE) in spring 2009 and 2011. In 2009, a hands-on exercise in which the young women created toys for their children was the highlight of the event. In 2011, an edible car contest in which the young women designed, built and raced cars made from food items, proved to be an engaging activity for demonstrating the creativity in engineering.
