Catalog Description:
Individual instruction for the development of
technical facility and performance proficiency on Oboe, B-flat Soprano Clarinet,
Alto Saxophone and Tenor Saxophone. The lessons and consequent requirements will
be tailored to four types of instruction: as Principal Instrument of a Music
Major; as Secondary Instrument of Music Major; as Principal Instrument of a high
school or community performer; as Competency Development for teachers whose
primary instruments are keyboard, string, brass or percussion.
Prerequisite:
Score reading ability; familiarity with common
musical terms and symbols of expression, tempo and style; advanced proficiency
on another instrument, or, at least two years of clarinet/saxophone instruction.
Credit:
2.0 Semester Hours
Course Objectives: 1.
Develop advanced technical facility through progressive study of scales, scale
studies, daily exercises and etudes. 2. Develop advanced musical
expression through progressive melodic studies and appropriate classical
repertoire. 3. Present opportunities for public performance which may
include (but are not limited to) solo recitals, group recitals, or small
ensemble performance. 4. Develop techniques to limit performance
anxiety allowing for technical fluency and confident musical expression.
Because 2 Semester hours of college
credit is awarded for successful completion of one semester of lessons,
it should be apparent that preparation (practice), regular attendance,
consistent progress and achievement is imperative. This course must be
considered equal in importance to other courses you may be taking.
Course Expectations:
1. Consistent weekly attendance at assigned lesson time. The lesson time will be
mutually decided upon by instructor and student. Once decided, it is expected
that the lesson time will be kept for the semester. This is time set aside
for you and it becomes part of your weekly class schedule. You are
expected to be at this class time. Make-up times will
be attempted in the case of sudden incapacitating illness or death in the
family. In other cases, make-ups will only be considered if I am
notified via phone or email 24 hours prior to the missed lesson. Even so, the
possibilities for make-up lessons may be limited by personal scheduling
restraints. Missed lessons
will result in grade reduction.
2. Diligent and conscientious preparation of assigned lesson material. Mastery
is the goal. Material will be assigned that is appropriate to the student's
level of development. It is expected that the assigned material will be
performed accurately and musically at the next weekly lesson. Plan on allotting
at least 30 minutes of practice 5 days each week. You need to decide prior
to registering that practice will be an integral part of your daily schedule.
Your grade will depend upon your progress and mastery of the assigned weekly
material.
3. Assigned lesson material may include (but not necessarily limited to):
a. Major or
Minor scale (depending upon current semester of study) to be played the entire
range of the instrument, low to high, and back.
b. All, or
portion, of a technical etude.
c. All, or
portion, of a musical interpretation exercise.
AND/OR
d. All, or
portion, of a movement(s) from a solo piece written for, or arranged for, the
oboe,
clarinet or saxophone. The solo may be accompanied or unaccompanied.
4. To demonstrate Mastery,
performance of the assigned material must be accomplished with a refined
characteristic tone; accurate intonation; consistent meter; accurate rhythms,
articulations and dynamics; correct musical phrasing and style.
5. Final performance (OPTIONAL), either in
recital, or a "jury" with attending music faculty.
Specific musical materials for study (etudes, solos, etc.) will be selected
based upon the developmental level of the student as assessed by the instructor.
6. As in any course, it
should be expected that study materials will have to be purchased. These are
listed below. We will decide the appropriate level at the first lesson. The
appropriate materials will be need to be purchased (either locally or online)
prior to the next lesson.
