Erosional forces at work on the environment

     Groundwater is an often overlooked mineral resource found in Matthiessen State Park. Pictured here are two places located in the Lower Dells Area where groundwater is seeping out of the sandstone walls and eroding the sides of the canyon. Most of the drinking water used in Illinois comes from Silurian dolomite units or St. Peter Sandstone, like that in the photos.
