     The photo above demonstrates clearly the erosive power of groundwater. This hole is located about 10 feet above the canyon floor.

     The photograph below has the bright yellow, orange, and brown stains that can typically be found in the Lower Dells area wherever groundwater is seeping out of the sandstone onto the surface. The colorations are caused by the high concentrations of iron and other chemicals the water has leached out of the rock as it percolated downward from the surface.
