SPN-2002 SP08 students at work
| SUMMER I & II | FALL | SPRING |
About my courses:
I teach blended, fully online and independent study classes. In all my classes, I use communicative, project-based learning methods that involve technology-assisted learning and student collaboration. For students registered in my courses, I also provide web links to supplemental resources that support assignments in the Course Outline for each course on this web page and in the Black Board course shell for each course.
Blended (BLN) -
My blended courses offer the best of traditional classroom sessions combined with the convenience and flexibility of online learning: face-to-face sessions once or twice per week combined with web-based resources available 24/7 for study and practice. The course uses a BlackBoard (BB) course shell and a textbook that is supported on the Quia platform with text related e-book, textbook exercises, laboratory and workbook as well as audio and video capabilities. Students can develop all the essential communication skills in the target language - reading, writing, listening and speaking, through collaborative activities in class as well as online as part of their homework. The amount of speaking practice you get is limited only by your willingness to attend class regularly and to participate in the Heinle Learning Center (HLC) speaking activities in Quia. In addition, students will learn about the rich and diverse cultures of many Spanish-speaking countries.
Fully Online (FOL) -
Because of the way I have built the course using a BlackBoard (BB) course shell and a textbook that is supported on the Quia platform with text related e-book, textbook exercises, laboratory and workbook as well as audio and video capabilities, students can develop all the essential communication skills in the target language - reading, writing, listening and speaking. The amount of speaking practice you get is limited only by your willingness to participate in the Heinle Learning Center (HLC) speaking activities in Quia. In addition, students will learn about the rich and diverse cultures of many Spanish-speaking countries.
All the course work,
including assessments, can be accomplished online with the one exception of the
final oral examination that I conduct by telephone appointment. The online
Spanish classes are almost totally asynchronous. This means that you do not have
to be online at specific times for a scheduled class activity. Students can do
course work when it fits into their schedules 24/7- as long as they complete the
assignments and assessments by the due dates for maximum credit. The only
exception is when students make an appointment in the BB - Discussion Forum to
meet with a classmate in HLC to participate in Find-A-Partner and Live-Chat
speaking and voice recording activities. To perform those activities, both
students have to be online in HLC in Quia at the same time.
Fully Online classes are very convenient and allow for flexible scheduling for
busy people. They also save money because of the elimination of transportation,
childcare and other travel-related expenses like clothing, meals away from home,
etc. In addition, for students attending 4-year universities with
transfer-credit articulation with IVCC, these course can be taken at the much
more economical IVCC tuition rate for credit transfer to the university.
(Confirm the transfer credit articulation with your university counselor for big
savings.)
Fully online courses require a commitment of time, effort and self-discipline to schedule and meet required deadlines. The successful online student is an organized self-starter who can keep track of assignments, read and follow instructions carefully and complete required course work on time. Does that sound like you? If so, I hope to "see" you online in a class soon.
Independent Study (IND) -
The advanced Spanish classes : SPN-2003 - Rhetoric & Composition through Literature, SPN-2004 - Survey of Hispanic Literature and HFA-1007-09 - Survey of Hispanic Literature, are offered as Independent Study courses. Student have a Black Board (BB) course shell to guide them, along with regularly scheduled, optional Salón sessions at which they can discuss their readings and any questions in a face-to-face setting with classmates and their professor. The BB course shell includes a Discussion Forum for collaboration including discussion of the readings and peer editing of literary analysis essays.
Grades in these courses are based on completion of assigned short essays based on readings, collaboration in the Discussion Forum and/or Salón, and improvement in writing ability over the course of the semester.
Watch for regular updates to this web page for advance information about my courses to assist you in planning your course schedule.
