Copyright Issues

Copyright and the Internet is an extremely complicated issue.

However, keep in mind the following basic information:

  • Assume that everything on the Internet is copyright protected. Do not take images or text from a web page unless the copyright owner has granted permission for the use of the material.

  • Linking to material on the Internet that you know or suspect to be in violation of copyright laws may, in itself, be a copyright violation.

  • Do not assume that the same copyright laws that govern "fair use" of copyrighted materials in the classroom apply to the use of the materials on the Internet. Fair use for the classroom assumes a limited audience, not a world-wide audience.

  • Your own materials on the Internet are copyrighted to you, but it is your responsibility to protect that copyright. Many people still include a copyright notice on their web pages, but this notice is not required for the material to be copyrighted.

  • Seek permission for copyrighted material that you would like to use.

  • Be aware that the college has a designated agent to receive statuary notices by copyright owners for materials on IVCC's web site in violation of copyright under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
